UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE IN TEXAS

Texas unemployment insurance options are available to residents in need of temporary financial assistance. To qualify for unemployment insurance coverage, residents must make an unemployment claim by following a series of steps and procedures.

Unemployment insurance benefits and unemployment coverage are available to residents who meet the requirements of the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act. Qualified residents are encouraged to apply for unemployment as soon as the unemployment period begins. As a requirement in the state of Texas, employers pay insurance reimbursements and taxes that support unemployed workers. Additionally, employers may not deduct unemployment taxes from employees’ paychecks. Unemployed individuals do not pay unemployment taxes.

Unemployment insurance benefits help to provide temporary financial assistance in the event of job loss or temporary unemployment. Unemployment insurance benefits may be available to workers who were fired for reasons other than misconduct, who have been victims of stalking, family violence or sexual assault, those who were unable to work due to a medical illness, but are now able to return to work, or those who quit their jobs to move with a spouse in the military. However, unemployment applicants may be exempt from receiving unemployment benefits in Texas if they quit their jobs willingly for personal reasons such as staying at home with a child or starting a new business.

Unemployment claims, benefits and employee resources are all available through the Texas Workforce Commission. Applicants will work with the Texas Workforce Commission to apply for EDD unemployment benefits, request a payment and submit an appeal or view an appeal status.

Additionally, applicants will also contact the Texas Workforce Commission to stop unemployment insurance coverage after full-time employment has been obtained. To ensure timely processing of unemployment insurance benefits, applicants must have an employer’s name, phone number and address readily available. The unemployment insurance applicant must also know the start and end dates with the previous employer, the rate of pay and the number of hours worked. When submitting an unemployment claim, non-citizens must provide an Alien Registration number.
