Grant Programs

Many federal aid applicants and beneficiaries in Texas are also interested in finding government grants. Like federal benefits, government grants are free payments awarded to those who qualify. Most Texas grants are designed to cover the costs of housing and education, but many other grant opportunities are available.

Free Government Education Grants

Current and prospective students who demonstrate financial need can easily qualify for federal grants. For example, a Federal Pell grant offers low-income students as much as $5,920 in free money to pursue a degree. A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) awards a needy student as much as $4,000 a year. Also, an Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant awards up to $5,920 to students with a parent who died during military service in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Educational grants can sustain students as they pursue a certificate or degree in higher education. The best part is that students can come out ready to start a great job while completely free from the stress of having to repay a loan.

Free Government Housing Grants

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) distributes housing-related grant money to local public housing authorities (PHAs) in Texas. Several government grants are available for eligible families to repair their homes and make them more energy-efficient. The Single Family Housing Repair grant awards as much as $7,500 to homeowners so that they can make needed improvements to their homes. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) also offers the Amy Young Barrier Removal Program. The program awards grants of up to $20,000 to renters and homeowners who want to make a living space accessible to people with disabilities.

These are just some examples of the many kinds of grants available to low-income Texans. Look around to find the perfect grant for you or someone in your family.
